What's the best way to take notes on a pdf?

Drawing on my own experience, especially when reading an article off my Samsung tablet, I would use a variety of graphical methods like idea maps, graphics organisers, or visual tools to capture useful notes and ideas from the reading, with the aid of a pocket notebook. At home, when reading off my large-screen laptop, I use my larger "ideas scratchpad", similar to the Bienfang NoteSketch, except mine is larger, foolscap size. My eventual choice of note making and idea capturing tool will depend on the text organisational pattern of the article. If it's a desciptive article, I would use an idea map, or better known as mind-map, a proprietary term of Tony Buzan. If it's about a process or skill acquisition, I would use a flow chart. If it's about a chronology of events, places, time and important person(s), I would use a time line or a transitive order diagram, if the article is textually extensive and intellectually intense. If it's about a problem and a solution, I may choose a fish bone diagram, or better known as Ishikawa Diagram in the quality circles movement, alternatively, a causal loop diagram. It's is about a long story like a movie, a story grid or story board would be my likely choice. My rationale for using graphical methods is that t are fast, easy to follow, and good for memory recall!
